I love oven stews as they practically cook themselves, and as the taste of the ingredients really comes out - no tricks are needed. This Carelian classic, karjalanpaisti in Finnish, is usually made with just meat, but I add veggies and voilà: a full meal with just 15 minute preparation!
Cooking time:ACTIVE 15 min, PASSIVE 2-10 hrs
(for 6 servings)
500 g beef hock, cut in large pieces 500 g pork hock, cut in large pieces 2 carrots, chopped 4 potatos, cut in cubes 1 onion, cut in half 4 dry bay leaves (laurel) 15 whole black peppers 1 teaspoon salt 3-4 dl water
Place meat, veggies, potatos, and spices in an oven dish. Pour hot water until the meat is barely covered.
Heat in 150 C for one hour and then in 80 C for at least 2 hours
I put this stew in the oven in the morning and leave it there the whole day - dinner cannot get any easier.
